Happy Birthday, BookBlog

You may notice a few changes around here. In honor of BookBlog’s birth, the site is in the process of getting a brand new birthday outfit. (Well, technically, we went live on May 28, 2002. We discussed our first book the next month, so I consider all of June to be its anniversary.) Not all of the secondary pages have been redesigned, but they’ll get there as time allows.

With each passing title, BookBlog continues to impress me. Our discussions have been simultaneously exciting and disappointing, challenging and straightforward, and heated and amenable. I am often surprised at our feelings about the selections, what we choose to focus on, and the directions our conversations take. We often disagree, which ignites many of our most enthusiastic debates. Yet, we maintain the necessary balance between confrontation and conformity that keeps us focused on our purpose. It’s all about the books.

My hope has been to create a forum for open discussion of literature, and each of you has proven to be what is necessary for its realization: true booklovers. There are those who read, and then there are those who love reading. Your passion is what drives this site, and I consider myself lucky to know you. This anniversary is a celebration of you all.

Mary -
The new look is wonderful. I want to thank you for running this site. You have done a marvelous job. I have met a great bunch of people and have read some interesting books. Some of which I liked, others not so much. The many different (and sometimes strong) opinions have brought about some thought-provoking ideas and concepts about books, styles of writing, lifestyles, etc. Plus - I really like the debates between Rich and Andy ::grin::
Thanks again Mary!

Mary -- Thanks so much for creating and running the site, and for inviting me to jion when you started it up! I've loved discovering new books and hearing what other people have to say about them. And I've learned things -- for example, don't expect anyone to read a 1000 page book right before the holidays.

The site looks great, too.

And yes, I'll be posting a link on my site VERY SOON. I promise.

One question -- are the books up top from your collection?

Kate and Sarah, I'm very glad you like our new look!

Sarah, those are my books, but I wouldn't really say I have a collection. I give most of them away when I'm done because space in this tiny apartment is very limited. If I want to reread something, I buy it again. Since each sale helps keeps a favorite author in print, I don't mind double-spending on books.

Wow. It's so colorful! Nicely done, dearie.
Your efforts with this site have given us all a lot to of challenging and entertaining debate. Thank you for all your hard work and perseverance. It can be a thankless task, I'm sure - and frustrating. But you have kept us going.

I received my copy of Blindness today. As soon as I finish The Red Tent, i'll get started. Looks intriguing.
