Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven

Ana brought up Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven in the comments of another post, but I thought it could do for a mention on the home page. Tonight, ABC will air the made-for-tv version of our July 2004 selection at 8 p.m. EST. You might want to check it out. Or not, if you read some of the reviews.

From The Boston Globe: "It turns out that the five people you meet in heaven are going to bore you to death all over again."

From Chicago Sun-Times: "Albom has turned his slender novel into a movie so thin you can't help but see through it. For this, ABC is pre-empting 'Desperate Housewives'?"

From The New York Times: "For all of its eventual effectiveness as a weepie, 'The Five People' is too often turgid."

who narrated the movie?

It was narrated by Ellen Burstyn who played Ruby.

I did watch the entire thing even though it felt really slow at times. It was a little disappointing how the ending didn't include that Eddie was waiting in heaven to teach a lesson to the girl he saved. But, it wasn't as bad as the reviews made it out to be.

wow
i feel so stupid.
i know i brought it up, but i didn't even get to watch it. :-(
i was studying my butt off for finals.
i completely forgot about it.

how was it???????

It wasn't as bad as some of the reviews made it out to be. Some parts were slow, but I enjoyed it overall as a feel-good Hallmark made for TV movie.

The end with Tala was way shorter and not as well explained as it was in the book. And, John Voight and Tala did this really stupid swimming bit after he made good on killing her.

I watched the whole thing - but got so annoyed with all the commercials it killed any sense of mood. For the last half hour, it seemed like there was 4 minutes of movie between 6 minutes of advertising.

And who did the make-up for Jon Voight, anyway? Ease up on the liver spots. Instead of just looking old, it was like he was already decomposing.

Heh. I couldn't help but notice the liver spots thing, too.

Although I had it running on the TV, I read a book at the same time. It kept me from even noticing the commercials.

I watched this movie on TV just last night and I thought it was wonderful. I lost my mother in an auto accident a year ago and have been seriously grieving ever since. I am not a religious person, but this movie helped me put her death into perspective and I hope and PRAY someone is good enough to put it out on DVD as I would certainly purchase it for myself as well as my brother and sisters. The message of this movie is something we all need to remember....our lives are all intertwined and everything we do affects others, not just ourselves. Thank you to Mitch Albom for writing it and thank you to Hallmark for making it into a movie. It has made accepting my sweet mother's death a little easier to bear.

Joan, it'll probably end up on DVD eventually. In the meantime, you could certainly point people in the direction of the book.

I have read the book and watched the movie, they are a work of art.
I am really interested in owning the movie. Would anyone know where I might be able to buy it.

As far as I know, the movie version isn't available for purchase yet. It was just aired, so it'll probably take them a bit of time before it's released.

The DVD will be released the second week of June from Hallmark Entertainment and Lion's Gate Home Video. In stores everywhere.
