Book Swapping

As you can imagine, I have a lot of books. I'm not a collector and rarely read a title twice, so I keep finished ones in a pile and offer them up to whoever happens to visit. The pile has been getting bigger and I thought it might be a good idea to join a book swapping site. After checking a few of them out, though, I changed my mind.

PaperBackSwap

"Eventually we will ask our members to pay annual club dues so that we can operate the club (probably between $10-$20 per member per year). But for now we are waiving the annual club dues so that you can become a member of the club for free!" Yeah, suck me in until I'm committed then make me pay for my membership. They must get their data from Amazon (although I couldn't find any direct links), so there has to be another way for them to make money.

TitleTrader

There's a lot of bitching and moaning in their forums about points and product condition and non-receipt and disputes and ratings and and and... It also seems like some members post in the forums just to get people to look at their inventory lists. They practically beg each other to take their unwanted stuff away.

Bookins

$3.99 per book you receive and they provide mailing labels, including postage, for the books you send. I was almost tempted to try it when I made the mistake of looking at the "Our Favorite Sites" page. BAFAB is the first link on their alphabetical list, an idea I find to be the most stupid book meme ever. First of all, you don't need a made-up week to buy a friend a book. Its creator writes terrible reviews fawning over terrible books. And, it's no coincidence that BAFAB weeks happen to coincide with the start of each Amazon Associates fiscal quarter. I know Bookins has nothing to do with it, but I had to close the window anyway.

BookMooch

You have got to be kidding me. It gets worse. And he plays the lute, too.

Have you tried Bookcrossing? I have had some luck with them.

I just boxed up a lot of books to donate as well. It's almost painful to let them go but if I don't start reducing the piles of books around here they may just take over.

wow, you didn't even have to say much about BookMooch to get your point across. what a pathetic guy!

anyway,
i've also been searching for a way to swap books that i don't want to keep, but don't want to throw away either. i could just donate them to a good will or the salvation army...but, i've seen their collections, and it'd just break my heart to leave them there.

my ideal swapping club would be one where there's a place that storages all these unwanted books and as long as you've sent in a book, you can choose whatever title you want that they hold in storage, no matter what size or what the original price of the book was. i could be okay with paying a small fee a year...like...no more than $10?

Michelle, I have a BookCrossing account and get their newsletter, but it has to be more than a year since I went to their site. Releasing books into the wild wasn't for me, but I should probably go back and see what's going on there with trading books.

Ana, I almost called that site KookMooch, but I restrained myself. Oops! There went the restraint.

The problem with all these trading sites, it seems, is how to go about making money in order to keep the site running. And then there's dealing with the x-factor, the people who go in and mess it up for everyone else.

I have been a member of Paperback Swap for a little over a year now. They haven't made me pay any fees yet. So far it has been pretty good.

Andrea, a friend of mine got me to join Bookins. I'm not thrilled about the $3.99 per book, but it is incredibly convenient. Since I have a lot of books to trade, I might join the others as well. If I have any thoughts on which works the best, I'll update here with another post.

What a very mean-spirited post. I'm confused about what you might consider wrong with bookmooch. It's a free service, the guy you find so pathetic makes no money from it (nor even seems to spend his points), and there are a lot of charities that benefit from it. In my year of using bookmooch, I've never run into those photos or the other links you provide, so I wonder how much time you spent to find links to make this man look like a fool.

I've tried most of the book trading places and found a home at www.frugalreader.com.

I've been a member of Paperback Swap for well over a year and I love it. No fees at all, yet. Of course I realize that they may have to eventually start charging a membership fee, but they have stated that it will probably only be $10 or $20 a year. As far as I'm concerned, it's well worth it.

I have been a member of Paperback swap for 2 and 1/2 years. they are teriffic. If I have a problem or cannot find out what I need. I write the Librarian and I get an answer within a day. They are very patient and sometimes fun to talk to. I have some really wierd problems, for instance when printing a wrapper, it sometimes comes out in jibberish or Russian. We found the problem was my printer. You cannot print on fast draft. I have more problems with the members and they fix that too. I have turned a number of people onto PBS and they are tickled too. I have just about completed all of my collections thanks to them. If you are a jerk and want to get rid of damaged books, you are in for a surprise, they do not suffer fools. The majority of the members are great and I have had some great conversations. Sure there are always going to be snaffus, but it happens everywhere you go and shop. They take care of you, if you have a legitimate complaint. They mainly let you take care of business between members, which is great. No middle man. but I do need another site. I need WWII books and certain authors that are almost impossible to get. someone out there is buying or trading certain authors to corner the market. Wierd. It is trading! Anyway, I think paperback swap is great and would recommend to anyone. I keep my own stores of books in trunks and send them out as requested only paying the postage. I have swapped over 100 books.

hi,
i am a member of paperback swap and have not had a problem yet... if you have alot of books to offer and people want them then after u send it u get a credit toward a book you want. if there is a problem the site fixes it.
the site also makes money by selling postage including delivery confirmation.
they also make money buy selling credits.. its a little over 3 bucks a credit BUT when the person sends the book you dont need to pay for shipping...
anyways, like i said so far paperback swap seems to be the best...

I happened to do a post on my site about a new company called swaptree.com, which is a multimedia swapping site. You can swap books, DVDs and CDs for any of the other (ie a book for a DVD.) What makes this site so great is that their computer program does all the work. You could end up sending your book to one person and a totally different person sends you the DVD you wanted. It does not cost anything except postage, which you print right from your computer.

I ran across your site because I am doing a round up of many of the book swapping and rental sites. I did not know about Bookins or Titletrader. Thanks for the info. anna www.green-talk.com
