Quills

The 2006 Quill Book Awards have been announced, the people have spoken, and I guess I’ll have to add Tyler Perry’s Don’t Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea’s Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life to a TBR pile. Despite being a fake inspirational title by a fictional character played by a comedian, I’m sure it will be quite entertaining. Plus, I’ve always viewed Vaseline as an underutilized resource and probably will be able to put some of the book’s tips to good use.

i don't think i'd heard of the Quills award before--sorry, i don't know much about book awards. but, after taking a look at the list of the Quills awards, i was curious as to why the Madea book won. so how is the winner for Book of the Year chosen?

i recognized the INK SPELL title by Cornelia Funke only because my old boss LOVES to read Funke's stories. i've never seen these books at a bookstore. probably because i don't usually go to the children's/middle grade section. interesting nonetheless, one of the titles looks very interesting: THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY of EDWARD TULANE, but i'm only judging from the cover of the book.

it was pleasing to see that Christopher Moore won for general fiction. i think i'll put that one on my TBR list. i just hope that it's a clean slate, unlike The STUPIDEST ANGEL. i don't want to have to read all of his books to understand this single one.

on another note, i've been gaining a lot of interest in graphic novels (non-manga). Alison Bechel's FUN HOME: A FAMILY TRAGICOMIC is on my TBR list, and i think i'm going to add Brian Fries' MOM'S CANCER to it. last week, i ordered Ben Catmull's Monster Parade and Jordan Crane's The Last Lonely Saturday. i'm really looking forward to those.

I'm not sure how they picked the book of the year, but I have a feeling it has something to do with which book got the most overall votes.

I have to admit that other than a few of the titles and authors, I didn't recognize most of the books. I'm terrible when it comes to the most new and notable titles, but it's probably a symptom of my perferring paperbacks. I rarely read a new book since hardcovers are difficult to tote around.

Graphic novels aren't my thing, but I have put Fun Home and Blankets on my TBR list. I'll try to pick them up the next time I'm in a bookstore.
