Schoolhouse Rocks Independence

And on the fourth of July they signed it
And 56 names underlined it
And now to honor those first 13 states
We turn the sky into a birthday cake

They got it done (Oh, yes, they did!)
The Declaration (Uh uh huh!)
The Declaration of Independence (Oh, yeah!)
In 1776 (Right on!)
The Continental Congress said that we were free (We're free!)
They said we had the right of life and liberty
And the pursuit of happiness

I love these School House Rock videos! Such fond memories of vegging out in front of the TV on lazy Saturday mornings. Please don't judge! Those were days of my foolish youth--before I discovered the addiction of books. Anyway, tidbit of info: the videos weren't always accurate. One of of the Grammar videos Chuck Barry is white!

I love them, too. Thanks to Schoolhouse Rock, I can recite the preambles to both the Declaration and the Constitution.

When I taught, I used to show them to my students as often as I could. They loved "Conjunction Junction" and "Electricity."

Have you heard that cd of Schoolhouse Rocks covers done by bands like Better Than Ezra and Blind Melon in the mid 90s?

No, but (many, many) years ago I heard a song by Tribe Called Quest that worked "Three, It's the Magic Number" into the chorus.

I think it's a shame that today's generation of kids probably won't get to experience these nostaglic references to their past once they grow up. Things/trends change so fast; nothing lasts long enough for the kids to become attached to it. Do you think that's the reason for the high divorce rate? (The Sunday Styles section of the NY Times recently did an article on the prevalence of break-ups after the 3 year mark.) It's like people say to themselves, "Ok, you've been hanging around too long; I'm bored with you. Next."
